bolted in

Posted by e. (New York, NY, United States) on 17 March 2008 in Business & Industry and Portfolio.

Sometimes, we look at the outlines of things, for example, the steel rails and the cross ties, and we forget about the rail spikes, the things that hold them together. Who have been the ones in your lives to hold you together, to bolt you in when you feel like falling apart?

I was debating whether or not to post a picture of the actual railway station. But it's really rather boring. A plain white building with a platform that you can use to get on the train. Doesn't it sound like any other station? Exactly. I found the actual tracks much more interesting.

I like the composition, but also the thoughts that accompany it. Me? My mother and father are the bolts that have kept this track anchored to the solid earth. I owe them everything.

Thanks for this decision, e.! Fixed and immovably rigid, it makes me philosophy that so many people can be even more rigid than this railway part: the pebbles underneath allow for a minimum of up-and-down movement, and there are devices in the rails that allow for expansion and shrinking as a result of temperature, this prevents damage, and rigid people always damage themselves because they lack such devices. (You must sometimes think I'm a vicar or something, excuse me :).

There is something about the details to be found at railroad stations . . they tend to be rugged yet purposeful, basic but up to the job. Just like this!
