sawdust and cobwebs

Posted by e. (New York, NY, United States) on 30 November 2007 in Miscellaneous.

I snuck into the art department in Georgetown University and was walking around taking pictures. There were a couple students in there who were staring at me. It was very awkward.

I have decided to use this photo (why this photo? I couldn't tell you) to issue a sort of request. My photography is very sporadic. If you look closely at the dates the photos are taken on, you'll realize that entire bunches will come from the same day. I always keep my camera on me though, but a lot of the time, the inspiration just isn't there. So I want to conduct an experiment. If the members of this wonderful community would be so kind, provide me with some prompts. It can be as specific as an apple, or as vague as something round, or as strange as a dragon. I can't promise that anything will come of this, but I want to be able to carry around a list of concepts or ideas and hopefully bring them out in my future photography.

Thanks for your words on my pblog. Very encouraging. Here is my suggestion, join dpchallenge, redbubble and few other photo sites. You need not compete in any of their challenges but you'll be greatly inspired by different shots posted on these sites.

I teach photography in my day job and I give students words or phrases to consider as short timed photo challenges. I might send them out for an hour for instance, with the challenge to photograph 25 shots considering such words/phrases as;

'Obsolete'
'New for Old'
'courage'
'tangled'
'out of time'
'slotted'
'sign of the times'

By concentrating on simple ideas such as these, it opens up the possibilities of interpretations of whats around you. In my opinion, its often the little details where the spectacular can be found.

Can't give any better suggestions than what's already been given.. When I go out to shoot it's what catches my eye/moves me. I stand in one place and almost meditate and usually something just inspires me. Can't be more specific than that.. I'm a touchy feely sort-of person and tend to go with my instincts. ;-)

Unique abstract composition, e! I like the contrast of textures and tones, mid-air capture and angle here. Wow, I don’t think there’s much else I can add to all the truly excellent suggestions above! Personally, I tend to go with my heart, and shoot what moves me as I see it, which can range from deep-feeling ones, to fun light-hearted ones. :) The titles and themes basically form themselves as the images come together. :)
