did you hear?

On Wednesday, October 17, the 14th Dalai Lama was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in honor of his efforts for peace, nonviolence, and universal acceptance. The next few photos will be of that event. Go here to start at the beginning.

I wanted to share this card that was passed around at the event. It shows the kind of ridiculous restrictions the Chinese have placed on the Tibetans.

it is sad what china is doing the the Tibetans. It is also sad that the worlds superpowers are not doing much about Tibet because it does not have any economic value. I look forward to the day when the people of Tibet will kick china out of their country.

Man - that's ludicrous! It's so sad that none of the "super" powers are doing anything to help Tibet...but as rags says it's because they hold no economic value for the super powers!

My part of the world, we keep hearing more of such ludicrous statements. And we thought the age of Imperialism was over! :(

I went to the site mentioned on the pamphlet and undersigned. Although I'm not a friend of Mr. Bush this time I agree with his statements about the Dalai Lama. I find the Chinese government on this aspect ridiculous because they want to have a say even in life after death with their claim on being in charge with "reincarnation", maybe they don't even know what it entails. On the other hand I have understanding for their huge task to being responsible for a very large country with many problems and difficulties that they want to participate in the world's economy and prosperity, but everybody can tell them that suppression of religious and spiritual cultures will be counterproductive.

i dont see how the chinese government can have a say in afterlife of anyone.Duh.But thanks for sharing,it really is so oppressive when anyone just wants to force everyone to stick to one belief. They looked like they are opening up but i still see so much news of religious persecution..

Thanks for showing this, I't amazing how preposterously immature a Govt can be. I would blush at such ignorance of the 'Real' spiritual laws.

WOW! If this is true, then the Chinese government is pretty much in an off-reality power-trip place, and will be very surprised when no one, and especially not the Dali Lama, takes them seriously on this edict.

It boggles the mind how a gov't could actually believe that their law supercedes the law of the universe/God/Allah/whoever. If it wasn't so sad I'd be laughing my head off...

Hi e., many thanks for sharing, such stupidity should be punished by death. What is the Chines government thinking? No-brainers to me!!! They should just leave Tibet in peace!

I just wonder how you would go about putting in a request for reincarnation, and if its granted say, do they give you a certificate to prove it.......hmm, a very strange law, a kind of hyper-reality.

Wow, have to say I agree with Amy here. It is really stupefying that any human being or group of human beings can think so much of themselves and their ‘powers’ that they hold themselves at the level of, or above the level of the laws of the universe/God/Allah. And yet it does happen. One of my ‘gripes’ about the Chinese government is indeed their persecution of so many of religious faith (it does pain me to hear of the sufferings so many Tibetans have gone through, and many Christians as well! – you may be interested in the book 'The Heavenly Man' , true story of the persecution, torture and many other sufferings experienced by Brother Yun, and other fellow Christians in China) who in the Chinese govt’s view do not “toe the official line”. It is indeed a sad world we live in.

Wow, how crazy! I can't believe such a law exists. China should move on, it's not worth this.

ps : I have personally met Brother Yun, and can attest to his testimony of his appalling sufferings (and astounding joy and peace in the face of it!)

(Apologies about all the "ps"-s; it's been a very long day and getting to that time of the morning! Just added above comment to your earlier page, and think it belongs here as well). This is an excellent post, e.

So i'm not allowed to be reincarnated without permission - hummmm <scratching head> well thats just silly. I can't even wrap my brain around making any sense of such a statement.

I heard about this...I also heard that the Dalai Lama vows not to reincarnate in Tibet if it is still ruled by China at the time of his death.
I think China has never shied away from double-think, and that this is no exception. They claim that all religions are illegitimate; and yet they are "playing the game" by claiming a certain truth about reincarnation, which is a religious concept.
Their ability to ignore their own inconsistency, however, never stopped them from cruelty and military action.
